Using too much anti-biotics reduces its effectiveness. 80% of antibiotics in the US are fed to animals probably so that they can withstand the filthy conditions in which they are raised. Anti-microbial resistance deaths could surpass cancer deaths by 2050.

E. coli O157 is naturally found in the intestinal tracts of many farm animals, including healthy cattle, sheep, and goats. Animals can carry E. coli O157 and shed the germs in their stool but still appear healthy and clean. [CDC] The same contaminated poop from these animals is sprayed onto vegetables and fruit fields as a form of fertilizer. This leads to things like E. Coli outbreak in vegetables that people consume, like reported cases from lettuce, spinach, etc.
