India is the world’s largest exporter of beef

India is the world’s largest beef exporter, accounting for 20% of world’s beef trade. 2.6 million tons of beef was consumed in India in 2020. Its domestic dairy industry fuels beef and leather exports.
India controls 13% of the world’s leather exports, making it the 2nd largest exporter of leather shoes and garments globally and 4th largest producer.
Myth: India sends all its non-milk producing cows to shelters. 300+ million cattle and buffalo in India in 2019, and 136 million are adult females. Since the average age they produce milk on factory farms is 6 years and after which they are removed, and beef cattle and buffalos are killed in 1 year, there is no way cow shelters in India can handle hundreds of millions of cattle and buffalo every few years.
20 out of 29 states in India in 2020 have various laws regulating act of slaughtered cow, prohibiting the slaughter or sale of cows. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Goa, Kerala, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura and West Bengal are the states where there are no restrictions on cow slaughter. Cattle and buffalo are also sent to Bangladesh to be slaughtered.
