Manure releases ammonia, methane, hydrogen sulfide, and other organic volatile compounds. People living near animal factory farms experienced eye irritation, difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, and other acute physical symptoms. A 2021 study estimates that 80% of the 15,900 annual deaths that result from food-related fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution are attributable to animal-based foods.
