78% less risk of diabetes for vegan group

After 3 months on a vegan diet, a randomized control trial showed that blood sugar was lowered by 28%. [Preventative Medicine]

After 5 months on a vegan diet, 43% of type 2 diabetics were able to lower their medication, and found about a 30% lowering in blood sugar. They also saw a massive lowering of their total and LDL (or bad) cholesterol levels, and triglycerides. As an added bonus, they lost 13 lbs. [Diabetes Care]. This is because intramyocellular lipids (fat between muscles) gums up your insulin cells, thereby reducing the ability for the body to respond to sugar. Vegans had 31% lower levels of intramyocellular lipids. [American Society for Nutrition]

Overall, vegans had 78% less risk of all diabetes.
